What is Synthetic Dread Care?

Synthetic dreads are a popular choice for those who want to experiment with a new look without committing to permanent dreadlocks. These dreads are made from synthetic fibers and can be installed and removed easily. However, like any hairstyle, they require proper care to ensure they stay looking their best. In this blog post, we will provide you with some essential care instructions for your synthetic dreads.

Before Installation: Preparing Your Dreads

Before installing your synthetic dreads, it is important to give them a thorough cleaning. At Divinely Wicked, we rinse all of our hair with an ACV (apple cider vinegar) solution to remove any chemical coating that may be on the fibers. However, if you have sensitive skin, we recommend giving the dreads an additional soak in warm water with some ACV to ensure any lingering chemical coating is removed.

During Installation: The Right Layout Pattern

If you are self-installing or having someone who has never installed synthetic dreads before, we have included a grid for the best layout pattern. This pattern will help your dreadlocks lay naturally and ensure a more seamless look. Additionally, we have included some rubber bands that we use on our clients to secure the dreads in place during the installation process.

After Installation: Maintaining Your Synthetic Dreads

Once your synthetic dreads are installed, it is important to establish a regular maintenance routine to keep them looking fresh. While you can cleanse your scalp as often as you feel necessary, we recommend doing so once a week to once every two weeks. This frequency is usually sufficient to keep your scalp clean and your dreads in good condition.

When washing your synthetic dreads, use a gentle shampoo and warm water. Avoid using hot water as it can cause the fibers to become frizzy or lose their shape. Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp, being careful not to pull or tug on the dreads. Rinse thoroughly and squeeze out any excess water. Allow your dreads to air dry completely before styling or applying any products.

In addition to regular cleansing, it is important to be gentle when styling your synthetic dreads. Avoid excessive pulling or twisting, as this can cause the fibers to break or become damaged. If you want to change up your look, consider using hair accessories or wraps instead of manipulating the dreads themselves.

Lastly, protect your synthetic dreads while sleeping by wearing a satin or silk bonnet or using a silk pillowcase. These materials are smoother and cause less friction, reducing the risk of frizz and tangles.

By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your synthetic dreads stay looking divinely wicked for as long as possible. Remember, proper care and maintenance are key to keeping any hairstyle in top shape. Enjoy your new look and embrace the versatility of synthetic dreads!
